Is Ceviche Raw or Not? Understanding How It’s Prepared

Is ceviche raw or not? A bowl of fresh shrimp and fish ceviche with lime and onions

A refreshing Latin American seafood dish where fresh fish or shrimp is marinated in citrus juice, creating a firm texture and vibrant flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 500g fresh fish or shrimp (sushi-grade)
  • 1 cup freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 1 small red onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tomatoes, diced
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1 chili pepper, finely chopped
  • Salt to taste
  • Optional: avocado, cucumber

Instructions

  1. Cut the fish or shrimp into small bite-sized pieces.
  2. Place seafood in a bowl and cover completely with lime juice.
  3. Let marinate for 30 to 60 minutes until the texture becomes firm and opaque.
  4. Drain some of the excess citrus juice if desired.
  5. Add sliced onion, tomatoes, cilantro, and chili pepper.
  6. Season with salt and mix gently.
  7. Let sit for 10–15 minutes to blend flavors.
  8. Serve fresh, optionally with avocado or cucumber.

Notes

Use only very fresh or sushi-grade seafood. Ceviche is not fully cooked with heat, so proper handling and freshness are essential for safety.
